DISC GOLF HISTORY

🏁 Our Annual Disc golf and BBQ is May 15th and we look forward to having everyone join us at the beautiful Brackett's Bluff Disk Golf Course! ⛳

What? You say you like barbecue but don’t know about Disc Golf? Well… 🍗

🏌‍♂️ Disc golf began informally in the 1960s as players in Canada and the U.S. tossed Frisbees (remember those?) at makeshift targets, but it took shape in 1976 when "Steady" Ed Headrick invented the Disc Pole Hole—the sport’s first standardized basket—and founded the Professional Disc Golf Association History (PDGA). Initially popularized in the U.S., the sport grew through the 1980s and 1990s with the PDGA’s first World Championships in 1982 and courses sprouting in public parks, while Scandinavia, particularly Finland and Sweden, emerged as early international adopters. 🌏

📈 By the 2000s, disc golf exploded globally, with PDGA membership soaring from 7,000 in 2000 to over 100,000 by 2023, fueled further by a pandemic-driven outdoor recreation boom. Today, over 10,000 courses span 50+ countries, while professional events and media exposure hint at a bright future, potentially even Olympic consideration. 🏆
